Keep Calm and Read On…
Let’s discuss Fiction and why we love it so much. The fictional word of books is like a safe haven for many of us who tend to feel lonely, sad, or even those of us of have the need for adventure. Books have the power to show us that even at our lowest points, we’re not alone in what we are feeling. As kids, we read the Harry Potter series and were immersed into a magical word of witchcraft and wizardry. However, it wasn’t really the magic that got us. It was the sense of understanding that dragged us in. Then we were immersed into the rebellious world of the Hunger Games. We all envisioned to be as badass at Katniss Everdeen if it ever came to overthrowing a corrupt government (and they wonder why so many young people have started to protest in the past couple of years.) This is to say that yes, we read fictional books to escape reality for a little while, but sometimes, the fictional stories can become reality. There is even a study that says reading fictional books is good for you. Imagine you’re at a movie theatre alone watching a movie many others have also seen. The plot is the exact same as the others, but what you’re seeing is tailored specifically for you, using your memories to make sense of the plot. That is what reading fiction is like. Feeling the familiar in the unfamiliar. Books have the power to make it feel as if you’re having a conversation with a prose genius, having philosophical discussion about life and existence. Fictional books give you the opportunity to learn about things you might not have learnt otherwise. So, dear Book Café readers, we tell you this. Read what you can when you can. Learn from the world of fictional tales and find solace in the idea of finding yourselves in a book so tragically romantical, that it lights up your whole world.
